Fabric, Vinyl, or Paper: Best Peel and Stick Material Guide

For first-time parents shopping a Whimsy Tots mural, the design choice is usually the easy part. The harder choice is the one most parents don't expect: the material dropdown. Signature Fabric, Performance Vinyl, or Classic Paper. Three options, no obvious winner, and no explanation that fits in a tooltip.

That moment of paralysis is the one Whimsy Tots founder Lois Winstead had in mind when she built out the three-material range. Different rooms have different jobs. A newborn's quiet nursery needs something different from a four-year-old's playroom, which needs something different from a long-term family bedroom in an older home with imperfect walls. One material covering all three would mean compromise.

This guide walks through three simple questions that point to the right material, with a quick comparison at the end. Three questions to start with

The right material almost always falls out of three questions. The rest of this guide is the long version of those three answers.

1. Are you renting or staying long-term?

Renting changes the equation. A parent who plans to move in 18 months wants a material that comes off cleanly, leaves no residue, and doesn't risk a chunk of the security deposit. A parent in a forever home has more freedom.

For renters: Signature Fabric or Performance Vinyl. Both are peel and stick (self-adhesive), both come off cleanly when removed slowly at a 45-degree angle, and both leave the underlying paint intact when the paint was fully cured before installation.

For long-term homes: any of the three. Classic Paper enters the picture only here, because it's prepasted (water-activated), more permanent in feel, and best for a wall that won't change for years.

2. Are your walls smooth or textured?

Most American homes have one of three wall finishes: fully smooth, eggshell (very light texture from paint), or fully textured (orange peel or knockdown). The material has to match.

For smooth walls, any of the three works. For light eggshell texture, Signature Fabric handles it well because its woven base has enough give to settle into the surface. For heavier texture, Performance Vinyl is the only honest answer, because its 370 gsm canvas weight hides minor imperfections better than the others.

One important note: on real orange peel or knockdown walls, no peel and stick wallpaper is guaranteed to adhere properly. The cleanest path is to order a sample, stick it to the wall for a few days, and see how it performs before committing to a full mural.

3. Will you want to remove or reposition it?

This question separates the three most cleanly.

For frequent repositioning during installation, especially for first-time installers: Signature Fabric is the most forgiving. As a woven material, it doesn't stretch or warp like vinyl can when peeled off the backing. It can be peeled back and re-stuck multiple times to get the alignment right.

For occasional repositioning, or future removal when moving out: Performance Vinyl works, with the small caveat that it's slightly less forgiving on the first install. Removal is clean when done slowly.

For permanent installation: Classic Paper. Once water-activated and smoothed onto the wall, it's not designed to come off easily. This is wallpaper in the traditional sense, and it stays where it's put.

Signature Fabric

Signature Fabric is the premium soft and safe choice, and the most popular pick for nurseries. It's a 340 gsm premium polyester fabric with a fine woven texture and an ultra-matte finish that won't reflect light or glare in photos. It's 100% PVC-free and odorless out of the package, which makes it the right material to start with for a newborn's room or any space where parents want the gentlest possible profile.

The repositionability is what most first-time installers don't expect. Because the woven base doesn't stretch like vinyl, parents can peel a panel back and re-align it without warping the material. For someone who has never installed wallpaper before, that forgiveness matters more than the spec sheet suggests.

One design example: M5071 Dandelion Bunny Meadow. The soft watercolor meadow pairs well with the lived-in feel of a 0-to-2 nursery. The ultra-matte finish means the wall reads as warm and tactile, not glossy.

Performance Vinyl

Performance Vinyl is the heavyweight canvas choice and the most durable of the three. At 370 gsm, it's heavier than most vinyl wallpapers on the market, with a deep textile-like texture that hides small wall imperfections beautifully. (One note: this refers to the paper's feel, not its tolerance for heavily textured walls. The wall itself still needs to be reasonably smooth.) It's fully washable and scratch resistant, which makes it the right choice for spaces where sticky fingers and crayon marks are likely.

One honest note worth flagging upfront: Performance Vinyl is the only one of the three materials that contains PVC. The inks used to print it are GREENGUARD Gold certified for low chemical emissions, and the material is B1 fire resistance rated. For playrooms, hallways, and bathrooms where durability and washability matter most, Vinyl is the right choice. For a nursery, where the lowest-emission option is usually preferred, Signature Fabric is the better starting point.

Performance Vinyl is also 100% opaque, which means it blocks the underlying wall color completely. For parents who didn't repaint the room before installing, this matters.

One design example: M5576 Gorilla and Monkey Fruit. A safari scene in a busy playroom for a 3-to-10-year-old needs to survive years of touch and the occasional crayon. Performance Vinyl is built for that.

Classic Paper

Classic Paper is the closest the Whimsy Tots range comes to traditional wallpaper. It's a 214 gsm eco-friendly paper with a smooth, semi-gloss finish that makes colors pop on the wall. The installation method is different from the other two: instead of peel and stick, the back is pre-pasted with a water-activated adhesive. To install, parents spray the back with water (or use a wallpaper tray), then smooth the panel onto the wall.

The trade-off is permanence. Classic Paper is best for a wall that will stay this way for years, in a home the family owns or expects to stay in. It's not designed for repeated repositioning during install, and it's not designed to be removed and reused later. The semi-gloss finish makes Classic Paper reflect slightly more light than the peel and stick options. In a bright nursery this reads as luminous; in a darker room it reads as polished. Worth a sample before committing.
